கனடிய தமிழ் மகளிர் அமைப்பினர் ஏற்பாடு செய்திருந்த இக்கவனயீர்ப்பு நிகழ்வு நேற்று திங்கட்கிழமை காலை 9:30 நிமிடம் தொடக்கம் முற்பகல் 11:30 நிமிடம் வரை இடம்பெற்றது.

ரொறன்ரோவில் கடுங்குளிரான காலநிலை இருந்தும் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான தமிழ் மக்கள் தாயக மக்களின் அவலங்களை காண்பிக்கும் பதாதைகளை தாங்கியவாறு வீதியின் இருமருங்கும் அணிவகுத்து நின்றனர்.

9000 British Tamils gather in protest against war on Tamils in Vanni

More than 9000 British Tamils gathered Saturday in front of No. 10 Downing Street in London participating in a mass vigil from 3:00 p.m till 7:00 p.m, urging British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to exert pressure on the governments of Sri Lanka and India to call for an immediate ceasefire in Sri Lanka. This event marks the third of the ‘Awareness Campaign’ organized by the Tamil Youth Organization (TYO) in United Kingdom.

A petition signed by the protestors was handed over to the Prime Minister’s office. The petition, while expressing the gratitude for the Prime Minister’s positive response to the question raised Wednesday by Hon. Keith Vaz, MP, in British Parliament related to peace talks in the Sri Lankan conflict, placed the following requests for the urgent consideration of the Prime Minister:
To exert pressure on the Sri Lanka government to opt for peace negotiation instead of war,
To exert pressure on the Indian Government to support the proposal for peace talks in Sri Lanka, and
To act jointly with the UN to bring about a peace process in Sri Lanka.
The safety barriers put up by the authorities for an expected number of 500 were continually widened during the protest demonstration as the number swelled with mothers with children, young and old joining in.

‘Stop the war!’, ‘Stop Tamil genocide!’, ‘Mahinda! Stop the war!’ and ‘We want Tamil Eelam!’ were some of the slogans shouted during the protest, along with the beat of drums.

"The worsening humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Vanni where Tamil civilians are pounded with indiscriminate artillery barrage and aerial strikes killing even infants and children has energized the Tamil Youths in UK to rise in protest," protestors said.

The protesters said they hoped the "Awareness Campaign" of the youths will grow into force that will bring British Tamils to act in unison to find a just and honourable solution to the Tamil struggle,"

Several British media were seen at the protest to covere the event.

இதன்போது ஜெசிந்தா (வயது 17) எனும் இளம்பெண் சிகிச்சை பலனின்றி உயிரிழந்துள்ளார்.

மற்றையவரான கிளிநொச்சி பரந்தனைச் சேர்ந்த டெனிசியா என்பவருக்கு சிகிச்சை அளிக்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றது.

கந்தபுரத்தைச் சேர்ந்த சர்வானந்தன் (வயது 27) என்பவர் மன்னார் மருத்துவமனையில் இருந்து மேலதிக சிகிச்சைக்காக அனுராதபுரம் மருத்துவமனைக்கு இன்று கொண்டு செல்லப்பட்டுள்ளதாக மன்னார் மருத்துவமனை வட்டாரங்கள் தெரிவித்தன.

SLAF deploys cluster-bombs in Mullaiththeevu

Artillery barrage kills several civilians, dozens wounded within 24 hours

At least 18 civilians have been confirmed killed within the last 24 hours till 3:00 p.m. Sunday in several villages of Mullaiththeevu district and the outer suburbs of Ki'linochchi district to the east of A9 highway. Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has stepped up artillery barrage continuously throughout the period, causing deaths and injuries to several. Dead bodies have been spotted in many places and transportation of wounded has been completely blocked due to the relentless artillery barrage. At least 42 civilians were wounded Sunday alone, according to available data. Medical authorities in Puthukkudiyiruppu express fear that the casualty figure could be much higher than what has been reported.

Many outer suburbs of Ki'lnochchi are un-accessible for medical transport as continuous artillery barrage has targeted road infrastructure, completely blocking ambulances and all other transport of wounded and killed.

The artillery shelling and Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) attacks have been continuing from Saturday morning throughout Sunday evening.

8 civilians were killed according to the details based on recovered victims from Piramanthanaa'ru and Thearaavil in Ka'ndaava'lai division of Ki'linochchi district, and from Redd Barna settlement in Visuvamadu in Puthukkudiyiruppu division of Mullaiththeevu district.

At least 10 civilians have been killed Sunday so far and more than 42 wounded, including children, women and elderly, the latest reports said.

Sri Lankan shelling kills 4 civilians, children among 11 wounded

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) fired artillery shells claimed the lives of four civilians in Puthukkudiyiruppu and Visuvamadu on Saturday, according to medical sources. Four children were among the wounded.

The names of the slain civilians were not available at the time of the reporting.

After Cyclone Nisha's flooding in late Nov 2008 the ground is saturated and the reservoirs (tanks) are filled... as a result the monsoon rains of December have led to further flooding and suffering for the 350,000 person displaced by the Govt of Sri Lanka's military offensive into the Vanni.

Humanitarian tragedy in Vanni enters deadlier phase[TamilNet, Friday, 16 January 2009, 12:33 GMT]
Indiscriminate artillery, multi-barrel and mortar fire by the Sri Lanka Army from all the corners of shrinking territory centering Puthukkudiyiruppu town, its suburbs and adjoining jungles in the Mullaiththeevu district, which is overcrowded with civilians, has worsened the humanitarian tragedy that has been unfolding in Vanni during the last 4 days. There are deaths and injuries caused to the civilians fleeing the onslaught of the SLA. Medical authorities said the situation was beyond control Friday noon and the hospitals have come under attack and ambulances were not operating. Access route from Vadamaraadchi East has been cut off by the SLA that has entered Chu'ndikku'lam area.


Mullaiththeevu Puthukkudiyiruppu land route also remained blocked due to indiscriminate mortar attacks.

The entire area with civilians has come under artillery range. Gunfire was heard in all the directions.

Unless the shelling is stopped, every shell being fired into the overcrowded area would cause civilian casualties.

The fate of the patients and staff at Kallaa'ru hospital is not known.

The access route for civilians to cross over into Vanni mainland from Vadamaraadchi East has been blocked by the SLA, according to initial reports.

Medical personnel at the hospital in Visuvamadu said the situation was pathetic as SLA-fired shells were exploding in the close vicinity.

SLA shelling has targeted Vallipunam, Chuthanthirapuram.

There are reports of civilian deaths and casualties in Visuvamadu town being vacated by the civilians. Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) attacks targeted Athisaya Vinayakar temple area in Visuvamadu, causing panic among the fleeing civilians.

Detailed reporting and verification of casualties have become difficult under the prevailing circumstances.

Thirumavalavan launches fast-unto-death, demands India to stop war

"Mahatma Gandhi, who fought against British colonialists didn't think of taking the side of genocidal Hitler during World War II. He was not seeking personal vengeance against the British. Likewise, the present leaders in New Delhi should also take a bold decision that they will not support the genocidal war being waged by the Sri Lankan state on Eezham Tamils," said Kasi Anandan, a well-known Eezham poet living in Tamil Nadu, inaugurating the fast-unto-death campaign launched Thursday by VCK (Liberation Panthers Party) President Thol. Thirumavalavan.

The poet who delivered the inauguration speech reminded the audience of the fast-unto-death campaign of Thileepan in Jaffna, which was also inaugurated by him in 1987, demanding justice from India.

The main demand put forward by Thirumavalavan is India should stop the war in Sri Lanka with immediate effect.

Tamil National Movement Leader Pazha Nedumaran, two parliamentarians from Dr. Ramdoss' Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), veteran leader of Tamil Nadu branch of the Communist Party of India (CPI) R. Nallakannu, Joint State Secretary of the CPI C. Mahendran, and T. Vellaiyan, the president of Tamil Nadu Traders Union, Actor Mansoor Ali Khan, Artists Sandanam and Pukalenthi, and Subaveera Pandiyan took part as more than thousand cadres of the VCK gathered at the venue of the fast-unto-death campaign at Maraimalai Nagar, a suburb of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

Mr. Nedumaran, in his speech called for united action against New Delhi and blamed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi for the failure of timely action in safeguarding Eezham Tamils, even after issuing a 14-day ultimatum to New Delhi to stop the war.

13 civilians wounded in SLA shelling on Pongkal day

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) fired artillery shells targeting civilians who have been moving from other areas of Vanni towards Puthukkudiyiruppu, causing injuries to 13 civilians, initial reports from Puthukkudiyiruppu said. The indiscriminate shelling has targeted Kaiveali settlement in Puthukkudiyiruppu division of Mullaiththeevu district. The bombardment comes on civilian settlement comes on Pongkal Day, a common festival of Tamil identity. The Tamil diaspora has called off Pongkal celebrations.

The wounded were rushed to Puthukkudiyiruppu hospital.

தமிழ் நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்த அமைச்சர்கள் மற்றும் நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர்களும் இது விடயம் தொடர்பாக தங்களிடம் கோரிக்கைகளை முன்வைத்தனர். ஆனபோதும் தமிழ் மக்கள் மீதான இன அழிப்புப் போரினை நிறுத்துவதறகான எதுவிட நடவடிக்கைகளையும் தங்கள் அரசு இதுவரை எடுக்கவில்லை. தாங்கள் உறுதியளித்தமைக்கு அமைவாக வெளியுறவுத்துறை அமைச்சர் பிரணாப் முகர்ஜி சிறிலங்காவுக்கு அனுப்பப்படவில்லை.

இன்றைய சூழலில் பயங்கரவாதத்திற்கு எதிரான போர் என்ற போர்வையில் வான்வெளித் தாக்குதல்கள், ஆட்லறி, பீரங்கிகள், அதி நவீன பல்குழல் ஆயுதங்களால் தமிழர் வாழ்விடங்களை நோக்கி பாரிய தாக்குதல்களை சிங்கள அரச இயந்திரம் கட்டவிழ்த்து விட்டுள்ளது.

திட்டமிட்ட முறையில் அப்பாவிப் பொதுமக்களே நாளாந்தம் படுகொலை செய்யப்படுகின்றனர். 2 லட்சத்து 70 ஆயிரம் வரையான மக்கள் வன்னியின் ஏனைய பகுதிகளிலிருந்து முல்லைத்தீவுக்கு இடம்பெயர்ந்துள்ளனர். இவர்களில் பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கானவர்கள், ஏலவே பல தடவைகள் தொடர்ச்சியான இடப்பெயர்வுகளுக்கு முகம் கொடுத்தவர்கள்.

ஈழத் தமிழ் மக்கள் வரலாற்று ரீதியாக, புவியியல் ரீதியாக, பண்பாட்டு வாழ்வியல் ரீதியாக இந்திய தேசத்தின் உண்மையான நண்பர்கள் என்பதையும், இந்தியாவின் நலன்களில் அக்கறை கொண்டவர்கள் என்பதையும் இந்திய அரசாங்கம் உணர்ந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும். சிறிலங்காவுக்கான இராணுவ உதவிகளை நிறுத்தவேண்டும்.

Doctors call for attack free zones surrounding displaced hospitals

In a systematic well planned militarily and politically crucial campaign, the Sri Lankan Government directed military forces are pursuing attacks on densely populated areas east of the A9 in Vanni. Often in close proximity to relocated hospitals and camps of the fleeing population, its strategy seems to be one of aerial bombardment followed by immediate ground attacks, involving heavy artillery and mortar attacks that have caused increased civilian casualties. Above statistics and ground reports, echo a plea from government service doctors in Vanni, who have called for 'attack free zones' surrounding displaced hospitals.

Amidst the escalating military campaign forged by the Sri Lankan military forces through systematic, sustained aerial bombing and ground attacks, an alarming rise in casualties and fatalities is being witnessed by doctors on the ground.

Latest status reports reveal that following attacks on Ki'linochchi and Mullaiththeevu districts, there has been a loss of usable, sustainable facilities in the major District Hospitals of Maangku'lam, Mallaavi, Poonakari (Pooneryn), Akkaraayan and Ki'linochchi. With civilians fleeing east from these areas past the A9 Highway under continuous aerial and artillery barage, the remaining doctors and health workers in government service have had to flee with the civilian population in order to continue servicing their needs and the rising casualties.


Puthukkudiyiruppu hospital attackedSince alternate facilities have not been set up for civilians by the occupying military nor the ICRC, makeshift clinics and arrangements in schools and standing buildings are currently treating the injured in Visuvamadu, Tharmapuram, Kallaa'ru, Punnaineeraavi, Ka'n'nakinakar and Redbarna village in the Ki'linochchi District. Doctors say that these facilities are sparsely equipped and limited in their capacity to provide comprehensive medical care and rehabilitation. Current practices are mainly emergency in nature dealing predominantly with trauma injuries.

According to reliable medical sources, in the period 16th to 31st December 2008 this area alone had 57 admissions with 8 fatalities. Of those injured, 12 were below age 18. Significantly, more males between ages 19 and 60 sustained critical injuries. The increasing intensity of military action has led to 213 casualties including 28 fatalities in these areas alone between 1st and 13th January 2009. More than 10 of those severely injured have been children and youth.


Patients were forced to leave the ward and seek shelter fromt he attack at Puthukkudiyiruppu hospitalReports identify blast injuries, head and neck trauma, spinal and back injuries, loss of limbs and amputations, facial thoracic and abdominal blasts and lacerations, loss of vision and multiple fractures. Many of these patients are non ambulatory requiring critical care facilities and intensive care units. An acute shortage of blood is hampering emergency medical and surgical management of trauma victims.

The greatest number of casualties and injuries were reported on days of aerial bombings specifically targeting Vaddakkacchci, Kanakaambikaikku'lam, and Murasumoaddai areas. These were high density civilian locations where fleeing IDPs had relocated. These targets for aerial bombardment are all within 5 to 10km of makeshift hospitals located in the densely populated areas of Visuvamadu, Tharmapuram and Punnaineeraavi. Repeated statements by Sri Lankan military officials, including the SLA Commander Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka, have claimed that civilians will not be targeted in their military operations.

Above statistics and ground reports echo a plea from government service doctors at these locations who have called for 'attack free zones'. As closely followed artillery and shell attacks are adding to the casualty and fatality toll, local doctors have called on the ICRC and the Sri Lankan Minister for Health for urgent provision of supplies of medicines and surgical items, to ensure hospitals are protected from attack and for safe passage and transfer of the injured to Vavuniyaa District Hospital for essential comprehensive medical care. Meanwhile due to the unsustainability of Mullaiththeevu Hospital from previous attacks, Puthukudiyiruppu hospital plus a makeshift hospital at Vallipunam are currently reported to be accommodating patients from the Mullaiththeevu region which is under frequent attack by deep penetrating units from the south.

According to latest reports, fresh attacks east of the A9 have fuelled a massive civilian movement along the roads and are forcing the population to displace again towards Puthukkudiyiruppu. Local health authorities working with poor back up support are expressing fears of fresh outbreaks of communicable diseases as existing amenities and support mechanisms are rapidly being destroyed.

As civilians are under attack and on the run, many are facing psychological and trauma related conditions with most local NGO's being fragmented, overstretched and desperately trying to cope with unprecedented demands.

Severe shortage of vegetables, grain and food supplies is deeply undermining an already struggling malnourished population.


Family members and relatives at hospital mortuaryDoctors and humanitarian aid workers who experienced first hand the daunting post tsunami crisis in North east Sri Lanka, fear for the long term chronicity of this current campaign and ensuing medical crisis.

As the situation looks increasingly grim, Tamils across the diaspora are beginning to agitate and protest internationally for an immediate cessation of the military campaign and for international aid agencies to urgently intervene in the massive civilian tragedy that is unfolding. Away from the scrutiny of the international media and observers who have long since been denied access to 'a war behind closed doors', expatriate Tamils feel that the international community needs to urgently cast another eye on not only Gaza but on an equally ruthless bloody war in Sri Lanka that similarly spares none in it's wake.

படுகாயங்கள்

கடந்த பத்து நாட்களாக பொதுமக்கள் வாழ்விடங்களை இலக்கு வைத்து சிறிலங்கா படையினர் நடத்தி வரும் கடுமையான பீரங்கி மற்றும் வான் குண்டுத் தாக்குதல்களால் இதுவரை 140-க்கும் அதிகமான மக்கள் படுகாயமடைந்துள்ளனர்.

கிளிநொச்சி மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள மருத்துவமனைகளில் மட்டும் 100-க்கும் அதிகமானவர்கள் தொடர்ந்து சிகிச்சை பெற்று வருகின்றனர்.

ஆனால், இப்போது மருத்துவமனைகளுக்கு அருகிலும் சிறிலங்கா படையினர் எறிகணைத் தாக்குதல்களை தொடங்கியுள்ளனர். இதனால், பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான மக்கள் தொடர்ந்து இடம்பெயர்ந்து வருகின்றனர்.

சிறிலங்கா படையினரின் தாக்குதல்கள் கடுமையாக தொடர்ந்த வண்ணம் உள்ளன.

இந்நிலையில் காயமடைந்து வருகின்ற பொதுமக்களுக்கு உரிய சிகிச்சை அளிப்பதற்கு தேவையான மருந்துப் பொருட்களுக்கு கடுமையான தட்டுப்பாடு ஏற்படத் தொடங்கியுள்ளதாக மருத்துவமனை வட்டாரங்கள் தெரிவித்ததாகவும் "புதினம்" செய்தியாளர் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

இடப்பெயர்வு

தருமபுரம் வடக்கு, புளியம்பொக்கணை, வட்டக்கச்சி, கல்மடுப் பகுதிகளில் இருந்து மக்கள் தொடர்ந்து இடம்பெயர்ந்து வருகின்றனர். இவர்களில் பெரும்பாலானோர் ஏற்கெனவே கிளிநொச்சி நகரிலும், அதன் சுற்றுப்புறப் பகுதிகளிலும் இருந்து இடம்பெயர்ந்தவர்கள் ஆவர்.

மக்கள் இடம்பெயர்ந்து தருமபுரம் விசுவமடு தொடக்கம் புதுக்குடியிருப்பு வரைக்கும் வீதிகளின் ஓரங்களிலும் சதுப்பு நிலங்களிலும் காடுகளின் கீழும் தங்கி அவலப்பட்ட வண்ணம் உள்ளனர்.

மக்களுக்கு உதவிகள் கிடைக்கக்கூடாது என்று தொண்டு நிறுவனங்களையும் சிறிலங்கா அரசாங்கம் வெளியேற்றிய நிலையில் கூடாரங்கள் கூட இல்லாமல் திறந்த வெளிகளில் பொருட்களை போட்டு விட்டு மழையிலும் வெயிலிலும் பனியிலும் குழந்தைகள் உள்ளிட்டவர்கள் வாடி வருகின்றனர்.

சில தொண்டு நிறுவனங்கள் தமது வளமான இடங்களுக்கு வந்தால் ஏதாவது செய்யலாம் என்ற நிலைப்பாட்டை காட்டுகின்றன. இதனால் மக்கள் கடும் அவலத்துக்கு தள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளனர்.

மேலும் இடம்பெயர்ந்த மக்களின் புள்ளிவிவரங்கள் தெளிவாக மேற்கொள்ளப்படவில்லை.

இடம்பெயர்ந்த ஒரு தொகுதி மக்கள் அதே மாவட்டத்துக்குள் தங்கியுள்ளனர். பிறிதொரு பகுதியினர் கிளிநொச்சி மாவட்டத்துக்கு சென்றுள்ளனர்.

இடப்பெயர்வுகளால் அதிக பாதிக்கப்பட்ட மாவட்டங்கள் மன்னார் மற்றும் முல்லைத்தீவு ஆகும்.

பெரும்பாலும் விவசாயத்தை மையமாகக்கொண்ட மக்களுக்கு இடப்பெயர்வு பெரும் பாதிப்பை தந்துள்ளது. பாரியளவில் விவசாயம் செய்யும் கட்டுக்கரை-வவுனிக்குளம் பகுதி மக்கள் இடம்பெயர்ந்துள்ளனர்.

இடம்பெயர்ந்த மக்களுக்கு குடிநீர் - உணவு - இருப்பிட அவலம்தான் முதற்கட்டமாக இருக்கின்றது. இடம்பெயர்ந்த மக்கள் வீதியோரக்காடுகளில் அடைக்கலமடைந்துள்ளனர். சிறிய கொட்டில்களை அமைக்கும் முயற்சியில் அவர்கள் ஈடுபட்டுள்ளனர். எவரதும் உதவியும் கிட்டாத நிலையில், குழந்தைகள் உட்பட சிறுவர்கள் பெரும் அவலங்களுக்கு உள்ளாகியுள்ளனர்.

காட்டு மரங்களில் ஏணைகள் கட்டி குழந்தைகள் உறங்குகின்றன. தண்ணீருக்காக சிறுவர்கள் குடங்கள், கொள்கலன்களுடன் அலைகின்றனர்.

4 killed, SLA artillery targets civilian settlement in Puthukkudiyiruppu

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) fired artillery shells killed four displaced civilians, including the parents and the daughter of a family, residing in the settlement located behind the hospital of Puthukkudiyiruppu in Mullaiththeevu district Saturday night, according to medical sources. Two of the killed victims were 17-year-old students. Four civilians, including a 5-year-old child were wounded in the indiscriminate artillery attack. Meanwhile, artillery barrage on Vaddakkachchi and Pu'liyampokka'nai in Ki'linochchi district continued, disrupting the access roads for civilians to move away from the areas that have come under artillery barrage.

The families had displaced from Chlaavaththai in Mullaiththeevu to 9th division of Puthukkudiyiruppu after SLA offensive in the district.

The victims killed in the artillery attack which took place around 11:00 p.m. Saturday were: Kaaththan Thuraisamy, 61, the father, Sinnamma Thuraisamy , 55, the mother and their daughter Thamilini Thuraisamy, 17, and S. Thavakumar, 17.

Puthukkudiyiruppu hospital authorities identified the wounded as Manchu Kalatheepan, 26, Divya Kalatheepan, 5, Mariyamma, 60 and Suppiah, 62,

Tension prevails in Puthukkudiyiruppu.

Tension and chaos prevailed in the hospital, which was full of the wounded civilians, as they were forced to seek shelter from the artillery barrage.

The shelling on the civilian administrative centre in densely populated Vanni comes in the wake of SLA denial of medical transport and humanitarian supplies to the civilian population in Vanni.

11 of the victims on Thursday were children. Two of them were kililed. One of the children is yet to be identified.

The dead and the wounded were taken to the hospital, which has been struggling to cope with the civilian casualties.

The civilian infrastructure including banks and administrative bodies serving the Internally Displaced People of Vanni, are located in Tharmapuram.

Ki'linochchi district Government Agent's office is located a few hundred meters away from the attack site. The residence of the GA is around 200 meters from the Junction. The main school at Tharmapuram is situated 350 meters from the Junction that was targeted by the Sri Lankan artillery.
